While at the Air Force Academy, Gregg played college basketball and after his graduation, he played for the Air Force Falcons and also served as an assistant coach for the team.
On leaving the Air Force, he began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Armed Forces Basketball team, to Pomona-Pitzer before he left for the NBA as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors.
The coach was married to his late wife Erin Popovich for 40 years and had two children together. Since her demise, the coach has not remarried saying that he is content to be a single father to his two children.

Gregg has a long history of his career from playing college basketball to being a head coach. He began as an assistant coach with the Armed Forces Basketball team and then spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Pomona -Pitzer College before moving to the NBA as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors.
He then joined San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach, filling the head coach’s position after his dismissal from the team. In his first season with the Spurs, the team won 55 games.
