Darko Milicic was born in Serbia on July 20 1985 to Milica, a homemaker and Radomir Milici a construction worker. His younger brother Nemanja is also a professional basketball player who plays for the Serbia national team.

Milicic started playing basketball at a very young age and became a standout player in high school. After high school, he played for Partizan Belgrade in the Serbia League and was later drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the second overall pick in the NBA draft.

His early years in the NBA were not easy since his performance was not good and this often led to criticism. However, he started improving, eventually becoming the best player for the Pistons.

The centre position player is married to a lady by the name of Zorana Markus and they are blessed with three children: a daughter Lara and two boys Lazar and Luka.

Milicic is a successful businessman and a co-owner of a basketball club in Serbia. He has also invested in real estate and is a devout Christian.

Career

Darko started his youth career in BFC Beocin then moved to basketball club Sports World from Novi Sad where he attracted interest from bigger teams.

He was selected by the Detroit Pistons as the second overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft becoming the youngest player to appear in the NBA Finals.

Before the NBA’s All-Star break, Milicic was traded in the 2007 NBA draft to Orlando Magic. In the next season, he was signed by the Memphis Grizzlies on a three-year contract at $21 million. He got his lowest moment after suffering an injury.

He was again traded to the New York Knicks for Quentin Richardson and cash considerations, he opted to move back to Europe the following season.

Minnesota Timberwolves re-signed the player for four years at a fee of $20 million which was then waived by the club under the League’s amnesty clause.

He then joined Boston Celtics and two months later, he was released citing that he wanted to attend to private matters. Around the same time, he announced his retirement from NBA to pursue a kickboxing career.

Internationally, he played for the FR Yugoslavia U16 national team that won a gold medal at the European Cadet Championships.

He led Serbia and Montenegro to the FIBA World Championship. After retirement, he attempted to return with Metalac Farmakom and the ABA League but later changed his mind.
