Finn Balor made his professional wrestling debut on 23 November 2001 after training for some time at NWA UK Hammerlock. His wrestling career started quickly and within no time he had won the NWA British Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship.
In March 2006, Finn Balor signed a deal with New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). The Irish wrestler became known during his tenure with the promotion where he used the ring name Prince Devitt. While at NJPW, Finn won the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship three times. He also won the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship six times, twice with Minoru and four times with Ryusuke Taguchi.

Since NJPW had a working relationship with Mexican wrestling promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), Finn made appearances there. With CMLL, he won the NWA World Historic Middleweight Championship once.
Finn also wrestled for several promotions, winning several titles. On 15 May 2014, the Irish wrestled signed a deal with WWE. He joined the promotion’s development territory NXT and adopted the ring name Finn Balor. While at NXT, he won the NXT Championship twice and the NXT Championship #1 Contender’s Tournament.
Shortly after being promoted to the main roster, Finn Balor won a world title in the pay-per-view event. He became the second Irish wrestler to become a WWE champion after Sheamus. Finn has so far won the Intercontinental Championship twice and the United States Championship once.
