The Red Bull driver development program’s director Helmut Marko had already issued the Dutch rookie a “yellow card” for subpar performance, and it appears that the team’s tolerance has now been exhausted.
Following Alex Albon’s struggle with appendicitis, De Vries made his debut for Williams in the 2022 Italian Grand Prix and finished in ninth place, giving the impression that the sky was the limit for him.
Why is Nyck De Vries being replaced?
Because of his performance and experience that day, the Red Bull organization pounced in the off-season, and De Vries and Tsunoda were both named as drivers for AlphaTauri for the 2023 season.
But since then, things have not exactly gone smoothly. His P12 finish in the Monaco Grand Prix was the team’s greatest performance, but other than that lone positive development, there have been a lot of accidents, including an unfortunate DNF in Azerbaijan that was his own fault.
As a result, after 10 races and no points to his name, patience has run out, and his dismissal from the team was formally announced by Ricciardo on July 11. It is simple to understand why the Australian was chosen.
The Australian driver served as the team’s third driver and participated in a Pirelli tire test at Silverstone after the British Grand Prix after being reintegrated into Red Bull, the team with which he won seven of his eight Grand Prix titles.

Ricciardo has been given a second chance in his Formula One career after being parachuted into AlphaTauri on loan to replace De Vries for the second half of the year. Christian Horner was adamant that there were no plans to bring Ricciardo back into a Red Bull race seat, but the move will be made immediately, with Ricciardo returning for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The deal is viewed as a “loan arrangement” between Red Bull and AlphaTauri.
After a brief absence from racing, Ricciardo had said that he was psychologically prepared to return to Formula One. He summed up his return to racing by saying, “I am stoked to be back on track” while smiling.
