Career
Gabriel Magalhaes began his football career at the age of 13 at Avai. After one week, he returned to Sao Paulo due to homesickness. However, he made up his mind to go back to Avai and went through the club’s youth system before signing his first professional contract at the age of 16.
During the 2016-17 season, young Gabriel made over 30 appearances as Avai won promotion to Brasileiro Serie A. On 31 January 2017, Gabriel signed a four and a half-year contract with French club Lille. He played several matches for the Ligue 1 side before being loaned out to Troyes and Dinamo Zagreb, respectively.
With Dinamo Zagreb, Gabriel won the Prva HNL and the Croatian Cup. Upon his return to Lille, he began playing regularly and soon established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Ligue 1. On 1 September 2020, Arsenal announced that they had signed Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille for a fee reaching up to 25 million euros. The Brazilian made his debut for the Gunners on the opening day of the 2020-21 season in a 3-0 victory over Fulham. He scored his team’s second goal of the match.
