Career
Axel Witsel began his football journey in Belgium, playing for the youth teams of RRC Vottem and CS Vise before joining Standard Liege. He made his debut with Standard Liege on 17 September 2006 as a late substitute in a competitive match against FC Brussels.
Witsel spent five seasons playing for Standard Liege. During his time with the club, he won the Belgian Pro League twice, Belgian Supercup twice and the Belgian Cup once. He made 183 appearances and scored 42 goals for Standard Liege.
Witsel joined Portuguese side Benfica in the summer of 2011, signing a five-year deal. With the Bundesliga side, Witsel won the DFL-Supercup and the DFB-Pokal. He joined Atletico Madrid on a one-year deal last summer.
