Chelsea are optimistic about continuing contract talks with midfielder Mason Mount, which could devastate Liverpool’s summer ambitions.

Mount is nearing the end of his current contract and has been warned that if he continues to reject the option to extend, he will be moved this summer, with Liverpool leading a number of Premier League clubs in their pursuit of his signing.

As previously reported in March, contact lines between Mount and Chelsea have never been severed, and sources have verified that another round of negotiations is set over the coming weeks.

Chelsea is looking for a new manager to replace the recently departed Graham Potter, and it is said that the Blues, who have always been optimistic about keeping Mount, believe their new plans are compelling enough to persuade the academy graduate to stay.

High-level managers such as Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, and Mauricio Pochettino are all being considered as part of an intense recruitment process that Chelsea’s decision-makers are determined to get right, and there is renewed optimism that Mount will share that ambition and positivity.

Indeed, Mount is said to be more optimistic about the club’s future as a result of Chelsea’s managerial intentions.

An agreement is still a long way off, but Chelsea believes they can persuade Mount to stay and have recently hinted at a willingness to agree to a shorter contract, having tied left-back Ben Chilwell down to a four-year deal rather than the usual six, seven, or even eight years handed out to various players this season.

Chelsea’s newfound hope comes as a further setback for Liverpool, who have identified Mount as a key midfield target after losing out on Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham.

Liverpool contacted Mount’s representatives early on, fearing that a change in Chelsea’s direction would influence their attitude in discussions with the 24-year-old, and Jurgen Klopp’s side will now have to wait to see if Chelsea can ultimately reach a deal.
