Women’s Rugby is the fastest growing sport in Mauritius

Women’s Rugby is the fastest growing sport in Mauritius according to Rugby Union Mauritius (Rum).

In the last three years, the federation recorded a growth of 177 per cent rise from 119 to 211 female licensees.

In 2018, Rum launched the Mauritius 2024 Olympic program with the aim of qualifying a female team for the Paris Olympics.

In 2019, three junior clubs were created and participated for the first time in a domestic competition in Mauritius.

One of the major Mauritian clubs, Port Louis Sailors is predominantly female, as the focus has been on women’s rugby by emphasising work on the school and the younger generations.

Rum also hosted the largest women’s rugby tournament in Mauritius in 2019, the Scott Sevens.
