Sudan appoint Frenchman Velud as new nation team coach - Sports Leo

The Sudan Football Association (SFA) on Wednesday appointed Frenchman Hubert Velud, as the new coach of the Sudan national team.

Velud will replace Croatian Zdravko Lugarusic, whose contract with the “Desert Hawks” expired after the defeat to South Africa in an Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier in November.

Hassan Barquo, head of SFA National Teams Committee, said: ”We know that our task in Afcon and Fifa World Cup qualifiers is not easy, so we had to select a coach that suits the challenges that lie ahead.”

The Frenchman previously coached Togo between 2009 and 2010, and he also had spells with TP Mazembe, Etoile du Sahel and ES Setif, before leading Algeria’s JS Kabylie whom he left earlier this month.

Sudan plays in Group C of 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifications with Ghana, South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe.

In the 2022 World Cup qualifiers they were drawn with Morocco, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau in Group I
