  • James Wiseman has been recalled by his team, the Golden State Warriors, from the G League
  • Wiseman had been demoted to the G League a few weeks ago and was with Santa Cruz
  • Wiseman will rejoin the first team training with the Warriors after the Tuesday announcement

On Tuesday, the Golden State Warriors made the announcement that they had recalled centre James Wiseman from the Santa Cruz Warriors, a G League team.

Wiseman is scheduled to be available for the Warriors’ one-game trip against the Jazz in Salt Lake City on Tuesday afternoon. But Golden State will be without three players who were declared out for the Utah game on Tuesday: Stephen Curry (left ankle discomfort), Draymond Green (left hip stiffness), and Andrew Wiggins (right adductor strain).

After having trouble in the early going of the season, Wiseman was transferred to the G League almost three weeks ago. The Warriors believed Santa Cruz would provide him with the individualized attention, practice time, and game experience he needed to advance more quickly.

After four years, Wiseman hasn’t participated in a full basketball season. He only appeared in three games with Memphis in 2019–20, tore his meniscus during his first NBA season, then encountered several difficulties that prevented him from playing in any games in 2021–22.

The Warriors couldn’t afford the errors Wiseman was making as they stumbled to begin the 2022–23 season.

Wiseman averaged 15.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 1.14 blocks per 26.6 minutes in his seven games with Santa Cruz. On Saturday against the Stockton Kings, he recorded his first positive net rating, finishing plus-17, an indication that his understanding of the game is developing.

It’s unclear what Wiseman’s position will be now that he’s back with Golden State. With a 13-12 record, the team has started to find its rhythm, but it is still only slightly above.500.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr stated that the team’s developing chemistry prevents him from feeling comfortable changing his rotation frequently at the moment.

Just before going to the G-League, Wiseman, the 2020 No. 2 overall pick, had fallen out of Golden State’s rotation and hadn’t played in the Warriors’ three games before Monday’s blowout 130-95 win over the San Antonio Spurs.

“I don’t look at this as a demotion,” Wiseman told reporters on his demotion to the G league. “I’m just ready to go out there and hoop.”
