  • Andy Murray’s run at the Gijon Open came to an end after he lost to Sebastian Korda in the quarter-final stage.
  • World number 47, Sebastian Korda, will now face France’s Arthur Rinderknech in the semi-finals after defeating Andy Murray 6-4 1-6 6-1.

British number three Andy Murray failed to proceed past the Gijon Open quarter-finals after losing to Sebastian Korda 6-4 1-6 6-1.

The start time of the match between Andy Murray and 22-year-old Sebastian Korda was pushed back by nearly two hours. And the delay was because of an extraordinary encounter between Arthur Rinderknech and Carreno Busta.

Andy Murray had reached the quarter-finals of the tournament after recording wins over sixth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Pedro Cachin.

Just like his match against Pedro Cachin, Andy Murray lost in the opening set against Sebastian Korda.

World number 49, Sebastian Korda, wasted a string of break points before finally converting a chance to take a 2-1 lead.

He then notched the double break and seemed to be comfortably winning the opening set at 5-2. However, Andy Murray fought back strong, forcing the world number 49 to serve things out at 5-4.

Sebastian Korda wrapped up the first set with a win after 56 minutes.

Andy Murray wonderfully responded to Sebastian Korda’s first set victory in the second as he took a commanding 5-0 lead.

The former world number one wasted a chance at break point, but an error from Sebastian Korda yielded his second. He took full advantage of the opportunity and outshined his opponent.

Andy Murray survived the deuce as he made it 3-0 to continue the one-way traffic. The British number three took the next two games as Sebastian Korda tried to reduce the deficit.

Murray emerged victorious in the second set, wrapping it at 6-1, thereby forcing a deciding set. Sebastian Korda matched Andy Murray’s energy in the third set as he won the first five games.

He rallied magnificently to wrap it at 6-1, defeating Andy Murray after a two-hour and 47-minute clash to force the Briton’s exit at the Gijon Open.

Who Is Sebastian Korda’s Next Opponent At Gijon Open?

Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech will be Sebastian Korda’s opponent at the Gijon Open semi-finals. Arthur Rinderknech defeated Spain’s second-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta 4-6 6-3 7-6.

Arthur Rinderknech managed to fend off nine match points before collapsing to the court in relief after converting his own. The Frenchman dedicated his victory to his grandmother, who died five days ago.

Arthur Rinderknech lost the first set 6-4 but redeemed himself in the second set, winning 6-3. The Frenchman then booked a slot in the semi-finals after winning the third set 6-3.

The winner of the Arthur Rinderknech or Sebastian Korda match will face either Dominic Thiem or top seed Andrey Rublev in the final.

Earlier in the day in Gijon, Andrey Rublev showed a dominant performance as he secured a 7-5 6-3 victory against Tommy Paul.

Top seed Andrey Rublev will face Dominic Thiem on Saturday for a place in the Gijon Open finals.
