Maritzburg United beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in a thrilling Telkom Knockout semifinal clash at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Sunday afternoon.
With this win, Maritzburg have booked their place in next month’s final showpiece in Durban.
Judas Moseamedi scored a brace for the KwaZulu-Natal side who will face Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on 14th December.
Yagan Sasman found the back of the net for Chiefs.
Maritzburg were on the front foot from the get-go with Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma called into action as early as the 5th minute to keep out Pogiso Sanoka’s shot.
Again Maritzburg threatened when Keagan Buchanan then pushed his attempt inches wide in the 19th minute before Mxolisi Kunene forced Bvuma into another good save two minutes later.
Maritzburg were finally rewarded for their efforts on the half-hour mark with a mistake from Daniel Cardoso gifting the visitors the opener.
The Chiefs defender’s miscued back pass fell into the path of Moseamedi who rounded Bvuma finding the back of an open net.
Chiefs finally enjoyed a notable chance at goal six minutes after the break but Bernard Parker pushed his header attempt wide.
Maritzburg, though, regained their dominance soon and should’ve doubled their lead later but held out by the woodwork.
Moseamedi then missed two gilt-edged chances in quick succession before Chiefs levelled matters.
Chiefs’ Daylon Claasen Sasman levelled matters in the 78th minute. Richard Ofori pulled off a superb save to deny Samir Nurkovic, but Sasman was on hand to tap the ball home.
The Team of Choice regained their lead six minutes later through Moseamedi who volleyed home Bandile Shandu’s cross to silence the AmaKhosi fans.
Chiefs pushed forward in an attempt to push the game into extra-time, but Maritzburg held out to book their place for a maiden TKO final appearance.
