Kenyan football will have its eyes on Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed as she is expected to make an announcement on the future of football administration in the country, following the expiry of the tenure of the Caretaker Committee.
The Committee’s six-month tenure ended on Tuesday and the CS is expected to state the way forward, with the Federation still remaining disbanded.
“Following the expiry of the term of the committee and there being no legal provision to extend the term and with consultation with stakeholders and the President, we will make an official announcement on the way forward on Thursday this week,” CS Amina said.
The Committee chaired by Retired Chief Justice Aron Ringera submitted its report to CS Amina, which included a draft new constitution that they expect to be passed once the General Assembly of the Federation is convened.
“We are happy with the work that the Committee has done. You have done your country proud,” Amina said as she received the report from Ringera’s team.

She added; “Today’s report has validated the work we started to do in October and November. If we implement all these recommendations, then football in the country will improve and we will see a better organized FKF.”
CS Amina formed a committee to run Football in the country last year after disbanding the Federation, following a report from the Sports Registrar’s office that alleged mass corruption and misuse of funds.
The report led to the arrest of then FKF boss Nick Mwendwa twice, before he was released and a case opened against him at the Anti-Corruption Court.
The decision by the CS to disband the Federation attracted interest from FIFA. The world football governing body wrote several letters to the CS asking her to rescind her decision as it amounted to government interference, which was against FIFA statutes.
With the CS standing her ground and refusing to back down on demands from FIFA, the Governing Council in its sitting in Doha in February made the decision to suspend Kenya from all international football.
However, the CS has refused to comment on whether they are in talks with the Zurich-based body to find common ground and resolve the stalemate.

“I will not discuss any engagements I have with FIFA that is bad faith. Please don’t ask me any question on FIFA. Anyone wants to find out can call their FIFA offices in Zurich,” the CS said as she brushed off issues surrounding Kenya playing international football.
Meanwhile, she says that the report submitted to her by Ringera’s team will be actualized and the process towards adopting a new constitution will continue.
“This country is governed by the rule of law and we respect good governance. We want to ensure that if we are cleaning up any sport, we start correctly,”
“We know that FIFA will act on any embezzlement of their funds and we have agreed that any action they take, we will also be informed. We are looking up to them to see how they will address some of the issues that have been raised,” she said.
“As a government, we are custodians of public resources and our role is to ensure taxpayers money allocated to Federations is used in a prudent and transparent manner. We will continue doing what we are doing. We started with cricket and we are proud of the work done in football,” she further added.
If CS Amina refuses to bulge to the desires of FIFA to reinstate the Federation, then the country looks at a possible FIFA ban which will drown the country further away from international football.
