Tusker look to slim gap with leaders Homeboyz in top of the table clash

The FKF Premier League title fight gets intense on Sunday afternoon as table toppers Kakamega Homeboyz and Tusker FC clash at the Ruaraka Complex on Sunday.

Brewers Tusker will look to squeeze the gap between them and the leaders to just a point with victory at home, while Homeboyz will look to extend the lead to seven points with a win on enemy territory.

Homeboyz are also in danger of losing three points from their match against Mathare United and this will have a huge impact in the title fight. After Mathare forfeited their third successive game, they were relegated from the Premier League.

This will mean that all teams which had played against Mathare in the second leg will have their results annulled. Homeboyz had beaten Mathare and if that result is annulled, the difference going into Sunday afternoon’s tie is just a point.

But, they will both not be thinking about that heading into this fixture. Homeboyz won the first leg 1-0 in Kakamega earlier in the year and will be looking to complete a rare double over the brewers.

This was only the third loss for Tusker at the hands of Homeboyz in 14 meetings.

Out of those, Tusker has won 10 and drawn won, scoring 21 goals and conceding only seven.

Prior to this season’s first leg loss, Tusker had completed home and away sweeps over Homeboyz in two consecutive seasons.

Coming into this tie, Homeboyz leads the standings, with Tusker at the second spot. A win for Tusker will be a huge lift in the fight for the Premier League title.

There will be a sizeable number of players facing their former sides. Shami Kibwana will be playing against his former team for the second time after joining the brewers at the start of the season.

Defender Charles Momanyi is also lining up against his former team, having been part of their promotion squad before heading out to Gor Mahia.

Right-back Daniel Sakari is also coming up against his former side. He played in Bukhungu before joining Kariobangi Sharks.

On Homeboyz’s side, Eric Ambunya will be up against his former employers, having been part of the Tusker FC team that clinched the title last season.

Tusker are coming into the tie off an emphatic 16-match unbeaten run. They have not lost a single game since January 16. In that run, they have won 10 matches and drawn six. During that run, they conceded just three goals.

Homeboyz on the other hand have drawn three consecutive games and have only two wins from the last seven matches. They will look to improve on that count when they take on the league champions.
