Kenya’s Bandari on the verge of Confederation Cup history

After a 0-0 draw against Sudanese side, Al Ahly Shandy in their Caf Confederation Cup first-leg preliminary round tie in Nairobi, Kenya’s Bandari FC will be looking to qualify for the first round for the first time in their history on Friday in Shendi, Sudan.

Though this will be a tough task, coach Bernard Mwalala says they played well in the first leg and says they can make it difficult for Bandari.

A scoring draw will put Bandari through and any goal they score, the home side will need to score at least two more to go through.

Bandari will seek to pick inspiration from their performance against league champions Gor Mahia during Sunday’s Super Cup. Despite losing 1-0, the dockers said they were impressed with their performance.

The last time they played in continental football, Bandari drew 1-1 at home against St. Elloi Lupopo of DR Congo and lost away from home.

It is a history they want to erase but will be worried if their away form in the league last season is anything to go by.

They won only six of their 17 matches away from home. Another point of concern for Mwalala, a prolific goalscorer in his heydays in the national team and at club level with Tanzania’s Yanga, is the finishing.

Bandari have not scored in any of their games this season and only found the back of the net once in three games at the Kagame Cup tournament.
