Benfica stuns Barcelona 3-0 in Portugal

Ronald Koeman is finding it hard at the Camp Nou, after losing this seasons second and consecutive champions League game in Portugal against Benfica. Barcelona lost to Bayern Munich in their first game of the competition.

Koeman is also under huge pressure at Camp Nou after a miserable start to the 2021-22 La Liga season.

Nunez was the star of the show as Benfica stunned Ronald Koeman’s men at Estadio da Luz.

Barcelona fall victims of the Uruguayan- Darwin Nunez who scored two goals in 3-0 win Champions League game.

Nunez opened the scoring after two minutes. He latched onto a long pass down the left flank before cutting inside onto his right foot and unleashing a drive in at the near post.

It was a superb piece of skill from the Uruguayan, who used a couple of step-overs as he danced into the box and created that yard of space to get his shot away.

Nunez scored his second goal on spot kick after Sergino Dest was penalized for a handball in the 79th minute.

Rafa Silva’s second-half strike, matched the score-line in a match that also saw Eric Garcia sent off late on.

Having failed to make the quarter-finals of the competition last season, the prospect of Barca even making the knockout stages of the tournament this time around is already distant.

Koeman recently embarked on a three-match winless run, which ended on Sunday during the 3-0 victory over Levante, only for the pressure to pile on again on Wednesday against Benfica.

Koeman is considered to be at risk of the axe between now and the end of the upcoming international break.

Koeman was close to being dismissed at the end of last season but managed to survive into the new campaign.

While Barcelona are looking at the very real prospect of dropping into the Europa League at best – by the time 2022 rolls around, domestically they are faring almost as badly. Recent draws with Granada and Cadiz have them sixth in La Liga, albeit with a game in hand.

Barcelona have fallen spectacularly in recent months, and while Koeman cannot be the sole person blamed for this, there is a sense that he is ripping what’s left of the heart in the club with a succession of agricultural and unworthy displays.

Speaking after the match, Koeman said the players were still behind him but added that he did not know if the board felt the same after the Benfica game.

His contract at the club expires at the end of the season.
