Man City are one game away from winning this season’s Premier League title, thanks to a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur last night. The Cytizens needed to beat Spurs in order to go in front of Arsenal in the standings ahead of final matchday this coming weekend.

Erling Haaland opened the scoring for Pep Guardiola’s side in the 51st minute before sealing the win in stoppage with a penalty. The Norwegian is currently the top goalscorer in the Premier League with 27 goals and his brace last night played a significant role in ensuring City are on course to winning a fourth consecutive league title.

City’s win last night did not only bring them a step closer to Premier League triumph on Sunday but also damaged Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of playing in the UEFA Champions League next season.

The Cytizens have to beat West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in order to be crowned champions. Meanwhile, their closest rivals Arsenal will be playing against Everton at the Emirates Stadium on the same day and hoping Guardiola and his men succumb to David Moyes’ side.

How Man City Beat Tottenham

Playing in a subdued atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Man City knew they were up for a tough challenge. Whereas their only mission was to win the match, there was division among Spurs fans as some wanted  victory while others were okay with losing in order to dent Arsenal’s chances of winning their first Premier League title in 20 years.

However, the players on the pitch wanted a win as it could give them hope of playing Champions League football next season. They made it clear early on with Rodrigo Bentancur almost finding the back of the net.

Tottenham Hotspur were playing some positive attacking football even though City seemed to be in control of the proceedings at some point. The visitors first big chance of the night fell to Phil Foden who almost scored after reacting fast to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s poor clearance in the box. He was denied by Guglielmo Vicario’s superb save.

City defender Josko Gvardiol was presented with a golden opportunity in front of goal to score his sixth goal in eight games but fired over Kyle Walker’s good delivery.

With the scores level at half-time, Arsenal fans may have started dreaming of a first league title in 20 years. However, things fell apart shortly after the break when Kevin De Bruyne’s low cross into the box was tapped home by Erling Haaland.

A good number of Spurs fans started chanting anti-Arsenal songs after their team fell behind and even adopted City’s famous Poznan celebration.

Man City goalkeeper Ederson was forced to leave the pitch in the 69th minute after a hefty collision with Cristian Romero. His substitute, Stefan Ortega, was called into action almost immediately and he made a brilliant save to deny Dejan Kulusevski.

The German then made the save of the night with time running out to deny Son Heung-min when in a one-on-one position.

Man City were then gifted a golden opportunity when Pedro Porro brought down Jeremy Doku in the box. Haaland, as cool as you like, slotted home the penalty to give his side a 2-0 lead in stoppage time.

As things stand, City will need just one point to win the Premier League title on Sunday.
