  • Carlo Ancelotti’s side have suffered just one La Liga loss this season and could potentially finish the campaign with 99 points, which would be their second-highest total ever

On Saturday, Real Madrid were crowned La Liga champions following Barcelona‘s 4-2 loss to Girona. The Los Blancos had earlier won their fixture against Cadiz 3-0 before Barca’s defeat meant they couldn’t deny Carlo Ancelotti’s triumph any longer.

Real Madrid are currently top of the table with 87 points, 13 points clear of second placed Girona. With just four games left to play, there is no way that Girona or Barca, who are third on the standings, could overtake the Los Blancos.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have suffered just one La Liga loss this season and could potentially finish the campaign with 99 points, which would be their second-highest total ever.

Real Madrid have now won 36 La Liga titles, which is nine more than their bitter rivals Barcelona. Saturday’s triumph means that Ancelotti has now won two Spanish titles, having previously won in 2021-22.

How Real Madrid Beat Cadiz

Hosting Cadiz at the Santiago Bernabeu, Carlo Ancelotti opted to heavily rotate his side while considering this week’s UEFA Champions League second leg tie against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

Thibaut Courtois was included in the starting XI for the first time since returning from injury. The Belgium international made a few big saves to keep Real Madrid alive in a disappointing performance.

A moment of brilliance by Brahim Diaz after the restart set the Los Blancos on their way to victory in front of home fans. After being found by Modric’s pass, Diaz made a good turn before firing the ball into the roof of the net.

Real Madrid took control of the tie from there and it was long before Jude Bellingham doubled the lead with a simple tap in. Bellingham has been very crucial in Real Madrid’s impressive campaign since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund last summer. Later in the day after Barca lost to Girona, the youngster is the third Englishman to win the Spanish league title since Laurie Cunningham, Steve McManaman, David Beckham and Kieran Trippier (2020-21).

Carlo Ancelotti’s side sealed their win against Cadiz in stoppage time when Nacho Fernandez unselfishly passed the ball to Joselu after a brilliant run for a simple finish.

Real Madrid needed Barca to lose against Girona or wait until next weekend at Granada to be crowned champions. However, the wait wasn’t necessary as Barca failed to avenge the 4-2 defeat inflicted to them by Girona back in December. They were again beaten 4-2 despite going in front twice.

Girona Prove Too Powerful For Barca

There was drama in the Girona vs Barcelona match from kick off as both sides found the back of the net within four minutes.

Xavi Hernandez’s side took the lead in the second minute when Andreas Christensen chested the ball down and then volleyed in a superb strike. Girona were level immediately after the restart as Artem Dovbyk headed home while unmarked in the box.

Things calmed down afterwards and it seemed the first half was going to end draw before Lamine Yamal was fouled in the box. Robert Lewandowski made no mistake from the spot as he scored his 17th goal of the season in La Liga.

Girona found the equalizer in the 65th minute after an unforgettable error by Barca captain Sergi Roberto allowed Portu to beat Andre ter Stegen. The hosts took a 3-2 lead two minutes later when Miguel Gutierrez’s deflected shot found the back of the net.

The shots continued to rain on Barca’s goal and the hosts eventually sealed the win in the 74th minute when Savio fired in a volley. Girona’s win over Barca allowed Real Madrid to win the La Liga title.
