The list of football managers out of work is increasing as the 2023/24 season wraps up across various European leagues. Whereas some will be looking for clubs to sign with during the summer, others like Jurgen Klopp will be taking a break from the beautiful game for some time.
In this article, we are going to take a look at 6 top football managers who are out of work. We’ve only mentioned managers who have proven themselves by winning trophies over the years.
1. Zinedine Zidane

Also known as Zizou, Zinedine Zidane is undoubtedly one of the greatest managers of the modern generation. Despite leading Real Madrid to three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles and domestic success, Zinedine Zidane remains to be one of the football managers out of work.
Zidane has turned down offers to manage several top clubs in Europe but with France job no longer within reach, it remains to be seen which club he will agree to coach.
2. Jose Mourinho
Another surprising name on the list of top football managers out of work is Jose Mourinho. When it comes to leading a team to success, few managers in the world can be compared to Mourinho. The Portuguese has won titles managing Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United and most recently Roma. To put in simple terms, the Special One has delivered silverware at every club he has managed except Tottenham Hotspur.
Mourinho parted ways with Roma early this year after two-and-a-half years in charge, with decline in performance being the reason. He has since been linked with various clubs but is yet to land a job. With several clubs needing a manager this summer, we expect the 61-year-old to be offered a contract with one of the powerhouses.
3. Thomas Tuchel
Thomas Tuchel narrowly secured the Bundesliga title for Bayern Munich in his debut season. However, things didn’t go as expected for him in his second season in charge of the Bavarians and the club decided to part ways with him at the end of the season.
Tuchel is currently out of job but with his experience managing top clubs, we expect him to take a leading role at another club soon.

4. Antonio Conte
Having won four Serie A titles and a Premier League, there is no doubting the fact that Antonio Conte is one of the best managers of the modern era. The Italian has managed several top clubs over the years, including Juventus, Inter Milan, Chelsea and most recently Tottenham Hotspur. He also coached the Italian national team between 2014 and 2016.
Just like the other names on this list, Cone is one of the football managers out of work. The 54-year-old has not been on the sidelines since parting ways with Tottenham by mutual consent in March 2023.
5. Hansi Flick
Hansi Flick is best known for his time with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, with who he won two consecutive Bundesliga titles and a UEFA Champions League, among other titles. The 2019-20 UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year couldn’t turn down the offer to manager the Germany national team in 2021.
However, things never worked out for him with the national team as Germany were knocked out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the group stages, leading to his sacking. He is yet to return to coaching.
6. Massimiliano Allegri

Closing our list of top football managers out of work is Massimiliano Allegri. The Italian is best known for his time with Juventus, with whom he won five Serie A titles and four Coppa Italias during his eight years in charge of the club.
Allegri was recently sacked by the Old Lady for his gestures during and and in the wake of the Coppa Italia final match against Atalanta a few weeks ago.
