Today’s win strengthened the Blues hopes of getting a European spot at the end of the season as they are currently seventh on the standings with 54 points, two points behind Newcastle United who occupy sixth place. Mauricio Pochettino’s side currently sit above Manchester United on the table even though the Red Devils have one game in hand.

Speaking after the Chelsea vs West Ham match, Pochettino said he was pleased with the performance of his players.

“I’m really pleased. I’m so happy for the players and the staff, they deserve this feeling. To come back a few games after the Tottenham game, they deserve full credit. It was a brilliant game. The game was amazing, the attitude, the capacity to compete, after Thursday I was so happy how we competed and then we have players who can create chances and score goals.” Mauricio Pochettino is quoted by Sky Sports.

Chelsea Vs West Ham

Chelsea started the match against West Ham on a very high note and went in front after 15 minutes of play, thanks to Cole Palmer’s close-range strike. The 21-year-old, who has been on stellar form this season, has scored ten goals in his last five appearances for the Blues.

Jarrod Bowen almost brought West Ham back into this contest immediately after Palmer’s goal but his header from a corner hit the crossbar.

Chelsea would dominate the game from there and went 2-0 up when Conor Gallagher pounced on a loose ball inside the box and then found the back of the net with a volley. Six minutes later, Thiago Silva’s header found Noni Madueke who headed home to put Chelsea 3-0 up.

Both Gallagher and Bowen hit the crossbar from close range but the scores remained the same at half-time.

West Ham’s hopes of pulling an unlikely comeback at Stamford Bridge in the second period were quickly extinguished by Nicolas Jackson’s goal in the 48th minute. The Senegal international was just at the right place in the box to tap in Madueke’s pass.

Bowen then made it a hat-trick of misses by smashing the woodwork again from a promising position. Frustrations continued to build among West Ham faithfuls as Emerson Palmieri failed to convert a golden opportunity and substitute James Ward-Prowse was saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Dorde Petrovic.

Jackson got the work done for Chelsea in the 80th minute when he beat Alphonse Areola after being found by Moises Caicedo’s through ball. The 22-year-old moved up to 13 league goals for the season after his second goal.

A good number of West Ham fans had left the Stamford Bridge at this time as they couldn’t stand the humiliation of conceding five goals in the fourth match this season.

But it was just Chelsea’s day as they recorded a seventh win in eight home Premier League matches. Whereas, Chelsea are closing in on a European spot on the table, West Ham’s European ambitions are hanging by a thread. The Hammers are currently ninth on the standings and are likely to part ways with under-fire manager David Moyes.

Next up for Chelsea in the Premier League is Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, West Ham will host relegation-based Luton Town.
