Fermin Lopez is a Spanish professional footballer currently playing for La Liga club FC Barcelona as a midfielder. He was registered in Barcelona’s first team early this year from Barcelona Atletico.

The 20-year-old was born in El Campillo, Spain and his first step into the career journey was joining Recreativo Huelva,  before moving to Real Betis Balompie. Playing for these clubs exposed him to what it entails to play professionally.

At the age of about fourteen, he was lucky to get the attention of FC Barcelona scouts who helped him earn a place at the prestigious La Masia academy, Barcelona’s youth academy which is known to be a ground for some of the world’s best footballers like Messi and Fabregas who thrived under the the best coaches.

Being at the academy allowed him to play alongside the future stars and be coached by the best managers in the football world. His development was amazing at the academy and he rose through the ranks, participating in various age groups.

His performance at the academy didn’t go unnoticed as he was included in the Spanish championship-winning U19A team. He was then loaned to Linares Deportivo in the 2022-23 season by Barcelona, for him to gain first-team experience.

The loan was successful as he was able to get to the starting line-up and eventually emerged as the team’s top scorer with 12 goals and 4 assists in 40 appearances, and this led to a return to Barcelona who signed him to a professional contract for Barcelona Atletico, the club’s B team.

He was recently included in the Spain U-21 squad and Barcelona also registered him with La Liga as a first-team player.

While growing up, his love for football was realized at a tender age and he played for his hometown clubs, which fostered his love for the sport. His parents emphasized on the importance of balancing school and football but eventually concentrated on the latter.

His greatest dream for now is to succeed at Barcelona, win trophies and become a regular starter, as well as representing Spain at the highest level.

Is Barcelona considering selling Fermin?

My view about the issue of selling Fermin currently is a big no. Why? Barcelona recently registered him with La Liga first-team, an indication that they value him and are willing to keep him in the team. At his  young age of twenty, the club decided to nurture his talent.

When Barcelona sent him on loan to Linares, they wanted him to get more playing time and this was not a disappointment as he got to start up, eventually becoming  top scorer for the club, with 12 goals.

This made Barcelona earn confidence in him and registering in La Liga first-team shows that he has the potential to deliver, and it is clear that he is a big investment to them, and so, selling him out will not capitalize on that potential.

What factors would foresee his transfer?

There are several factors that can see Fermin a suitable sale as the world of football is constantly changing. First, there are facts like injuries, disciplinary issues or a significant drop in his performance could lead to the club’s stand.

The player might as well request for a transfer especially if he does not have enough playing time, does not fit the coach’s plans or play style and also if he gets a better offer than what his club is offering him.

My passion is capturing the untold journey of global athletes from humble beginnings to superstars in their own right.
