Boniface eyes starting role after impressive Leverkusen bench showing

Victor Boniface, Bayer Leverkusen striker appeared for his team’s match against AS Roma but he was not on the starting line. He has been away due to a groin injury that made him go through surgery and he is now back on light training.

He sustained a groin injury in training ahead of the 2024 AFCON that was held in Ivory Coast and even underwent surgery which made him sidelined for some months, but has now begun training and will soon be back in the field.

The player has been a main contributor for Leverkusen’s success this season and has so far scored 16 goals and eight assists in all competitions and helped his team set a Bundesliga record for most consecutive unbeaten games at the beginning of the season.

Internationally, he represented the Nigeria national team and made his debut in late 2023, and provided an assist during the match. He was included in the squad that was playing at the 2024 AFCON held in Ivory Coast but suffered a groin injury while training, ahead of the tournament that made him miss out.

The 23-year old was born in Akure, Nigeria on December 23. In  Nigeria, street football is popular and growing up there, he was likely exposed to this culture, fostering his love for the game and potentially igniting a dream of playing professionally.

His first hometown club was Sapphire FC  where he was spotted by scouts from Norway, who led him to their country and made a move to FK Bodo/Glimt in the Norwegian top flight for about three years.

During that period, he established himself as a reliable striker, having scored 23 goals and 8 assists in 66 games. His performance did not go unnoticed as he attracted Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and after joining them, his performance continued excelling.

During his debut for the Belgian club, he netted a hat-trick in a UEFA Champions League qualifying game and in his tenure, he scored 22 goals with 12 assists in 55 appearances for the club.

Several clubs began noticing him and this time, German club Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and in this first season, he has already made an impact at the club. He has so far scored 16 goals and eight assists in all competitions and helped his team set a Bundesliga record for most consecutive unbeaten games at the beginning of the season.

He is also a member of the Nigeria national senior team and made his debut in September 2023, and during the match, he grabbed an assist, proving his potential on the international stage.

He was part of the squad that was playing at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast but during training, he sustained a groin injury that saw him go for surgery and was sidelined for several months. He appeared at the Leverkusen match against AS Roma this weekend but he was not in the starting line-up.

Boniface sustained an injury, a groin injury to be precise while training with the Nigeria national team in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations that was held in Ivory Coast early this year. The level of the injury was intense as it required surgery and thus, he missed out on the AFCON tournaments and also at the club. However, the surgery was successful and he is back in light training.

He even appeared for Bayer Leverkusen’s match against AS Roma Europa League during the weekend and this is an indication that he is ready to get back.

It isn’t easy to tell about someone’s future but we make predictions depending on performances. Based on his contributions at Leverkusen, his talent and age, he has the potential to be on the starting line and his future could be lying with other top clubs.
