In this article we take a look at players who scored five goals in a match in the English Premier League. Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer recently left many fans talking by scoring four goals as Chelsea thumped Everton 6-0 at Stamford Bridge. While it’s not everyday you see a player score four goals in a single match, the list of players who have achieved this is quite long.
According to GiveMeSport, 29 players have scored four goals in a single match in the Premier League era. However, only five have managed to put five goals past an opposition team. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the five players who scored five goals in a match.
1. Andy Cole – (Manchester United Vs Ipswich Town)

On 4 March 1995, Andy Cole became the first player in Premier League history to score five goals in a single match. The former England international ran riot in Manchester United‘s 9-0 demolition of Ipswich Town at Old Trafford. Despite managing 21 goals at the end of the season, he was far from winning the Premier League Golden Boot which went to Alan Shearer, thanks to his tally of 34 goals.
Cole scoring five goals in a single match shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone considering he was one of the best strikers of his generation. He spent six years with the Red Devils and won eight major trophies, including the Treble in 1999.
2. Alan Shearer – (Newcastle United Vs Sheffield Wednesday)
Another top striker of his generation, Alan Shearer is one of the players who scored five goals in a match. The former Newcastle United man found the back of the net five times on 19 September 1999, as his side thumped Sheffield Wednesday 9-0. Two of his goals were penalties.
Shearer is also the leading goalscorer in Premier League history with 263 goals. The 53-year-old is best known or his time with Newcastle United but he also had spells at Southampton and Blackburn Rovers. He retired from professional football in 2006.
3. Jermain Defoe – (Tottenham Hotspur Vs Wigan Athletic)
It’s quite unfortunate that Jermain Defoe never won a Premier League title yet he was one of the best players in England at the peak of his career. Defoe was lethal in front of goal and this can be proven by the fact that he is one of the players who scored five goals in a match in England’s top flight.

The 41-year-old, who is now a coach, achieved the five-goal feat on 22 November 2009 as Tottenham Hotspur demolished Wigan Athletic 9-1. Spurs were only leading 1-0 at half-time, thanks to an an early goal by Peter Crouch. However, they ran riot in the second half scoring eight goals, with Defoe bagging a hat-trick inside seven minutes and then adding two more in stellar fashion. His hat-trick is the third fastest in Premier League history.
4. Dimitar Berbatov (Manchester United Vs Blackburn Rovers)
One year after Defoe stunned the world with his impressive goalscoring, Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov joined the list of players who scored five goals in a match as the Red Devils crushed Blackburn Rovers 7-1. The Bulgarian opened the scoring from inside the box and then capitalized on Blackburn’s defending error to make it 2-0. He got his hat-trick later with a powerful strike.
With time running out, Berbatov scored two more goals to ensure his name is always mentioned when talking about the best goalscorers in England.
5. Sergio Aguero – (Manchester City Vs Newcastle United)

At the peak of his career, there were a few strikers who were as good as Sergio Aguero. The Manchester City legend was very lethal inside the box and would make even the most difficult of chances count.
On 3 October 2015, Aguero shocked the football world by scoring five goals in just 20 minutes. His first goal levelled the scores towards the end of the first half and then he returned with all guns blazing in the second period, scoring four quick goals. The Cytizens won the match against Newcastle United 6-1.
