Manchester goalkeeper Andre Onana recently received two yellow cards during Manchester United’s match against Coventry City and will not miss on the FA Cup final against Manchester City since the yellow cards only apply up to the quarter-final stage.
He received his first yellow card in the 85th minute with Coventry pushing for an equalizer. He took too long with a goal kick or another action to restart the game, which the referee penalized for time-wasting.
The second yellow card was shown during the penalty shootout, perhaps because of arguing with the referee, trying to distract the Coventry penalty takers. This second yellow card didn’t get him sent off because bookings from the regular game don’t carry over the penalty shootout according to the FA Cup rules.
In the FA Cup, suspensions for accumulated yellow cards only apply to the quarter final stage and since they were in the semi-finals, they will not affect his eligibility for the final and Onana will play at the FA Cup final against Manchester City.
Andre Onana biography
The 28-year-old is a goalkeeper for Manchester United in the Premier League and the Cameroon national team, and was part of the squad that played at the recent AFCON held in Ivory Coast.

His passion for the sport can be traced back to Cameroon at the Samuel Eto’o academy before joining Barcelona famed La Masia youth system when he was only fourteen years old. However, due to regulations from the non-EU minors, he could not officially join the academy.
Barcelona loaned him to Cornelia and Vista Alegre and he then found a home at the Dutch club Ajax where he started in their youth system, Jong Ajax . A year later, he received a call-up to the senior team due to his impressive performance.
He then made his debut and established himself as one of the best goalkeepers, achieving great success including:
- Reaching the 2016-2017 UEFA Europa League final though they lost to Manchester United
- Three Eredivisie titles for three consecutive seasons
- Two KNVB Cups for two consecutive seasons
- Johan Cruyff Shield in 2019
His impressive performance also earned him recognition on the international stage and he debuted for Cameroon, where he has since been a regular member for the national team.
In 2022, he transferred to Inter Milan on a free transfer and he continued his trophy haul, winning the Coppa Italia and SuperCoppa Italian in his first season though a doping suspension the previous year slightly disrupted his momentum.
In 2023, Manchester Signed him for a reported fee of $54 million and has since become a key player for the team, making crucial saves for the season.
Onana’s controversies in his career
Despite his talent, he has also faced some controversies in his career that have not deterred his talent. The major setback in his career was when he received a 12-month ban from UEFA after testing positive for a diuretic banned for its potential to mask other performance -enhancing drugs.
He appealed and the court of arbitration for sport reduced the ban to nine months. The following year, he had a fall-out with the Cameroon national team coach and the football federation president Samuel Eto’o’
This led to his exclusion from the Cameroon squad and an early retirement from international football but a year later, he returned to the national team and even participated in the recent 2024 AFCON held in Ivory Coast.
