Spanish star Garbine Muguruza has retired officially from tennis after a 14-month hiatus.
Some tennis pundits argue that it was just a matter of time before Muguruza called it quits after a lengthy hiatus. She had no desire to return to the court.
Why Garbine Muguruza has Retired
In a press conference on Saturday, the Spanish tennis ambassador said that the time has come for her to live another life away from tennis. Muguruza in a previous interview with Women’s Health in 2023 said that she wasn’t interested in playing tennis at the time.
All she wanted was to rest and give her mind some peace which is always elusive while on tour.

“Today I don’t feel like I want to go back to competition. I want to rest, be with my family and make up for lost time. I don’t go beyond what I’m doing today, in the present, and I don’t look beyond,” she stated.
She added that her time off the WTA Tour allowed her to do things that she couldn’t do earlier such as yoga and boxing.
Muguruza who retired aged 30 enjoyed having more time at the gym and giving her mind a breather which she never got for the past seasons.
“My body and my mind had I need this. By not competing I still keep fit, without always having to push myself to the limit. I go to the gym regularly, I love weight training, I do zumba, pilates, yoga, boxing. I take this opportunity to give a chance to those things that I couldn’t give a chance to when I was on the circuit.
Tennis has no place in my routine. I am aware of my teammates, maybe I can play sometimes but for pure fun, without intensity. It doesn’t occupy my mind, my routine or my day, I’m taking a real break and keeping myself completely off the court.”

The Spaniard is a two-time Grand Slam champion. She won the 2016 French Open and the 2017 Wimbledon tournaments. Muguruza, who is renowned for her strong serve and aggressive baseline style, had an incredible career that a time at the top of the WTA rankings.
Muguruza fell in love with tennis at an early age. She first held a racquet at the age of three and showed a lot of love for the sport.
She refined her skills in both Venezuela and Spain and 2011 saw her turn professional at the age of 18. She embarked on a path to make history in women’s tennis and had her moments with celebrated tennis players like Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.
Muguruza had her breakthrough in 2015 as she advanced to the Wimbledon final, where Serena Williams ultimately prevailed. But this also signalled the start of a run of consistent excellence.
She won her maiden Grand Slam championship at the French Open in 2016 after overcoming Serena Williams three times in an exciting three-set final.

Muguruza continued after with her winning streak. She defeated Venus Williams in the Wimbledon final in 2017 to add the esteemed title to her collection.
She rose to the world No. 1 after this victory and spent four weeks at the top of the WTA rankings.
Who Coached Garbine Muguruza?
Muguruza had coaching from a number of popular coaches during her career, most notably Alejo Mancisidor. He influenced her aggressive style in her early career.
Subsequently, she worked with trainers like Conchita Martinez and Sam Sumyk, who helped her deal with the demands of the elite ranks and improved her game.
Even though she sometimes struggled with injury and consistency, Muguruza was still a formidable opponent. She routinely challenged the top players on the circuit and accumulated ten WTA singles titles for her trophy case.
Following his last professional singles encounter in January 2023, Muguruza has now decided to retire from tennis. But her legacy will live on. With her two Grand Slam victories, power, and flare, she leaves a legacy of inspiration for upcoming tennis players.
