SportsLeo takes a look at the games that won Inter Milan the Serie A title this season. Inter clinched the Scudetto on Monday night after securing a 2-1 victory over bitter rivals AC Milan who were also their closest challengers for the title.

Simon Inzaghi’s side have been declared champions of Italy with five games remaining as they are currently on top of the table with 86 points, 17 above second placed Milan. The Nerazzurri have been in red-hot form this season and have clinched the title having lost just one league match since the start of this campaign.

1. Inter Milan 5-1 AC Milan (September)

Winning the first derby and the fourth league match of the season with such a huge margin boosted Inter Milan’s confidence as they aimed to reclaim the title they last won in 2021.

Inter started the game on a high note and took the lead inside five minutes, thanks to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s finish from close range. Marcus Thuram scored towards the end of the first half to ensure Inter were firmly in control of this tie.

Rafael Leao pulled one goal back for AC Milan shortly before the hour mark but goals from Mkhitaryan, Hakan Calhanoglu and Davide Frattesi ensured Inter secured a comfortable win. The victory saw Inzaghi’s side go top of the table.

2. Juventus 1-1 Inter Milan (November)

After Napoli showed no signs of defending the Scudetto, having won it at the end of last campaign, the two main rivals this season were Inter and Juventus. As a result, the first meeting between these two sides, carried a significant impact on the title race.

Juventus took the lead in the 27th minute but Inter fought back to level the scores barely six minutes later. With both sides playing carefully to avoid conceding a second goal first, the match played at Allianz Stadium in Turin ended draw.

3. Inter Milan 2-1 Hellas Verona (January)

To be honest, this was not a tough fixture for Inter considering Verona were the bottom team at the time. However, it carried a significant weight for Inter in the title race since they had been held to a 1-1 draw in the previous match.

For them to go top of the table at the expense of Juventus, they needed to collect all three points. Just as expected, they showed dominance from the early stages of the match and Lautaro Martinez’s strike in the 13th minute saw them take the lead. However, Verona made things difficult for them afterwards and found the equalizer in the 74th minute.

Davide Frattesi restored Inter’s lead in stoppage time but there was still time for more drama as the referee awarded Verona a penalty. Luckily to Simon Inzaghi and his men, Thomas Henry missed the penalty allowing Inter to win the match. This is undoubtedly one of the games that won Inter Milan the Serie A title.

4. Fiorentina 0-1 Inter Milan (January)

Inter had a difficult period after the turn of the year since they had several crucial matches to play between January and February. On 28th, they travelled to Florence where they faced a fierce Fiorentina side who were unbeaten in their last eight matches. A win in this clash would allow them to leapfrog Juventus, who had been held to an unexpected 1-1 draw the previous day.

Inter played the match without star midfielders Barella and Calhanoglu but Lautaro Martinez’s strike in the first half ensured the Nerazzurri walked away with all three points.

5. Inter 1-0 Juventus (February)

Next on games that won Inter Milan the Serie A title was the crucial 1-0 victory over Juventus on February 5th. The win saw Simon Inzaghi’s side go four point clear at the top of the table. Juve would go on to lose the next match against Udinese and be held to a draw by Verona before returning to winning ways.

Meanwhile, Inter won their next two matches, which were against AS Roma and Salternitana, taking firm control of the race for the Scudetto.
