He outburst towards the referee during Real Madrid’s match against Valencia on February 24th 2024
Real Madrid appealed the red card but the appeal was dismissed
Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid’s player has been suspended for two La Liga games following his red card and subsequent outburst towards the referee in a game against Valencia.
His red card came after a controversial moment in the final seconds of the match. In the 99th minute, Real Madrid had possession and Diaz sent in a cross. Bellingham headed the ball towards the goal but the referee blew the final whistle just before the ball crossed the line, and the goal was disallowed.
Bellingham was furious about the incident and felt they were denied a legitimate winning goal. He reacted angrily towards the referee, reportedly using strong language to express his frustration and this outburst led to Manzano showing him a red card even though the game was over.

His football journey started at Birmingham City youth academy when he was eight years and at sixteen he became the City’s youngest-ever first-team player, breaking a long-standing record.
The midfielder’s exceptional talent attracted the attention of several top clubs and in 2020, he signed for Borussia Edmond, becoming the most expensive 17-year-old English footballer ever. During his tenure with the club, he helped them reach the DFB-Pokal final securing Champions League qualification, and his performance earned him international recognition and numerous individual awards including the EFL Young Player of the Season and the Kopa Trophy.
In mid-2023, he joined Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in the world, where he became one of the most promising young players and integrated into the club’s squad with his versatility. He is also a regular for the England national team where he made his debut in 2020 and since then, he has become a crucial player for the team.
Why did the referee give the player a red card if the game was over?
The game was technically over but the referee is still responsible for maintaining order on the field. Bellingham’s outburst using strong language could incite further trouble and a red card sends a message about such behaviour.
The red card might also serve as a deterrent for future similar incidents because it shows the players that even after the whistle, they should respect the referee. The referees also have guidelines on how to handle disrespectful behaviour.
What’s Real Madrid’s take on the incident?
The club has not spoken about the red card or Bellingham’s outburst but in their official statement, they believe that the ball had crossed the line before the whistle was blown, denying them three points.
They however appealed the decision but it was dismissed, upholding Bellingham’s suspension. Some reasons could have held Real Madrid from commenting about the reasons like, avoiding escalation. Criticizing the referee’s decision would only have attracted unwanted scrutiny.
Another thing is that the club may have decided to respect the disciplinary committee’s decision and avoid making any statements that could be perceived as undermining their authority and settled on moving on from the incident to focus their energy on upcoming matches.
Bellingham’s suspension
Bellingham’s suspension was determined by the La Liga competition committee. The committee involves a group of officials responsible for reviewing disciplinary matters within La Liga. The committee analyzes reports from referees, match officials and other relevant sources before making decisions on player suspensions, fines and other disciplinary actions.

In Bellingham’s case, the committee reviewed the details surrounding his red card and the outburst, ultimately deciding on a two-match suspension for disrespectful attitude towards the referee.
Bellingham’s take on the La Liga ban
It has been a disappointing moment for the player and he thinks that the punishment was excessive. He feels the outburst, while heated, did not warrant such a long suspension since the game was already over.
