The list of players you forgot played for Chelsea contains some of the most prominent figures in the football world. Chelsea have had some fantastic players over the years, including the legendary John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.

But while those players shone at Stamford Bridge, others found it difficult to even break into the starting XI and eventually left to look for greener pastures elsewhere. Some like Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah did establish themselves and have since taken the football world by a storm while others never made it to the top level.

Putting De Bruyne and Salah aside, here are six famous players you forgot played for Chelsea:

6. Papy Djilobodji

El Hadji Papy Mison Djilobodji is one of those players many forgot once wore the Chelsea jersey. He arrived in the summer of 2015 from French club Nantes on a four-year deal. Despite being highly praised, Papy never fit in at Chelsea and was loaned out to Bundesliga side Werder Bremen barely five months after his arrival.

The Senegalese then left Chelsea on a permanent transfer in the summer of 2016 and has since played for various clubs across Europe. Now aged 35, Papy finds himself playing for Turkish club Gazişehir Gaziantep.

5. Scott Sinclair 

A child supporter of Manchester United, Scott Sinclair began his football journey with Bath Arsenal at a young age. After turning nine, the England international joined Bristol Rovers, where he would spend the rest of his youth career.

After showing signs of becoming a top player, he was signed by Chelsea in July 2005. However, things never worked for him  at Stamford Bridge and he spent the majority of his Chelsea days being loaned out to clubs such as Plymouth Argyle, Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and Birmingham City.

Sinclair eventually left Chelsea in 2010 and signed with Swansea City. After playing fort various clubs, including Manchester City, he now finds himself at Bristol Rovers. Sinclair is currently 34.

4. Fabio Borini

Fabio Borini is one of the footballers who have had a nomadic career. The Italian has had spells at clubs such as Swansea, Parma, Liverpool, Sunderland and Hellas Verona among others. But what many people don’t know is that he started his senior career at Chelsea. Borini joined the Blues in 2009 and spent two years playing for the youth team before being promoted to the senior team.

3. Oriol Romeu 

Currently playing for La Liga giants FC Barcelona, Oriol Romeu is one of the players you forgot played for Chelsea. The Spain international is best known for his time with Sunderland.

Romeu joined Chelsea in 2011 after graduating from Barcelona’s famed academy La Masia. But just like the other players on this list, he didn’t succeed at Chelsea and was loaned out to Valencia and VfB Stuttgart before being sold Southampton for £5 million.

After spending seven years with the English club, he returned to Spain in 2022 and signed with Girona. He then rejoined his boyhood club Barca last summer on a three-year deal.

2. Ricardo Quaresma 

Yes, the trivela king Ricardo Quaresma once played for Chelsea. Quaresma had a brief loan spell at Stamford Bridge in 2009 and its is one that majority of the Blues fan have forgotten because it was not fruitful. He made just four appearances before continuing with his career elsewhere.

1. Alexandre Pato

Not only is Alexandre Pato one of the players you forgot played for Chelsea but also one of the Brazilian wonderkids the world forgot about. Pato was highly rated during when he emerged from the youth team of Internacional. After scoring one of the finest goals in UEFA Champions League history against Barcelona, many believed he was destined for greatness.

However, the Brazilian wonderkid struggled with injuries and despite returning to Brazil and signing with Corinthians, he never succeeded in reviving his career. Pato had a spell at Chelsea in 2016 but injuries and lack of form saw him make only two appearances before returning to Corinthians.
