Miami Open 2024 is underway in Florida and it is an action packed ATP and WTA 1000 event. It is one of those tournaments that tennis players from both divides were anxiously waiting for.
It is a great event for those who fell out of the Indian Wells to redeem themselves. Some are lucky, some aren’t. But who are they?
What Has Happened so Far at Miami Open 2024
There is so much that has happened in Florida already as the tournament enters yet another decisive stage. Here are the developments.
1. Coco Gauff Lost But is Dealing With it Calmly

American tennis star Coco Gauff lost her bid to win in this prestigious tournament following a 6-3 1-6 6-2 loss to Caroline Garcia. Garcia took full advantage of Gauff’s inability to perform at her best on Miami’s stadium court to snap her seven-match losing streak against top-10 opponents.
Gauff confessed that she wasn’t at her best in windy conditions handing Garcia her first victory against a top ten player since she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the 2022 WTA Finals final.
“This is a tough loss. I do think one positive is the serve. You know, I got broken a lot today. I don’t think it was because of my serving,” she said after the match.
Gauff continued by discussing her strategy for handling setbacks, acknowledging that it usually takes her a while to move past a significant setback.
“I’m the type of person every loss kind of weighs on me heavy, especially one like today where I felt like I could have done better and I felt like I had the match in control, especially after the second. Honestly, if anything, it kind of helps being home so I can just drive and be home and be in my own bed!” she added.
2. Aryna Sabalenka is so Lucky

Aryna Sabalenka lost in the third round of Miami Open 2024. The WTA 1000 tournaments have been hard on her with the Indian Wells also bidding her an early exit. The Australian Open champion lost in three sets to Anhelina Kalinina. However, the world No. 2’s most recent loss followed an emotionally taxing week when her 42-year-old ex-partner and former NHL ice hockey player Konstantin Koltsov passing away just before the Miami event.
However, Sabalenka chose to participate in the competition and prevailed in her first match against Paula Badosa before losing to Kalinina on Saturday. Her loss set her back at least 2,000 points to dethroning Iga Swiatek as world No. 1.
3. Alexander Zverev is the New ‘Djokovic’
Russian tennis star Alexander Zverev is carrying the mantle at the Miami Open 2024 since Novak Djokovic withdrew from the event. He made it past the fourth round and is a clear favourite. Meanwhile, Zverev has delivered a less than positive assessment of the Miami Open venue, which has been the subject of much discussion in recent years.
Zverev provided his assessment of the unique Hard Rock Stadium location—which is home to the Miami Open tennis court—in a more thorough interview with the Tennis Channel.
The outside courts are makeshift constructions, and Zverev was among many who made it clear that he would have rather played at the Key Biscayne location that held this competition until 2018.
4. Holger Rune is Getting Worse After Boris Becker Exit as Coach
Following his decisive loss to Fabian Marozsan in his opening match at the 2024 Miami Open, Holger Rune has conceded that he ought to have pulled out. On the day of the match, the world No. 7 acknowledged that he was not well but he did not anticipate that his energy level would be so low on the court.
Marozsan is currently ranked world No. 57 and he often surprises the top-ranked ATP players. He pulled a surprise on Carlos Alcaraz at the Italian Open 2023.
