On Saturday, Newcastle United pulled what will be remembered as one of the greatest comebacks in Premier League history. The Magpies were trailing 3-1 late in the second half and suffered a major blow by losing three key players to injury.

To many, it seemed as if there was no way back for Eddie Howe’s side into the match. However, what started as a consolation goal from the penalty spot led to an equalizer and then the winning goal. St James’ Park erupted after Newcastle did what many thought was impossible.

Well, this is no the first time we have seen a team pull a shocking comeback in the football world. In this article, we’ll take a look at the greatest comebacks in Premier League history.

1. Newcastle Vs Arsenal (4-4)

If you’re an Arsenal fan then this will hurt and it’s probably a game that you remember will. In 2011, Arsenal faced Newcastle in a match that many expected them to win. The Gunners led 2-0 barely three minutes into the match, thanks to goals from Theo Walcott and Johan Djourou.

Things even got better for them as Dutch striker Robin van Persie scored two more goals before the break. Just to be clear, Arsenal were leading 4-0 at half time.

However, their downfall would come after the break and it all started with Abou Diaby being sent off five minutes after the restart for losing his mind and grabbing Joey Barton by the throat and then hauling him to the ground. Newcastle would go on to use the numerical advantage they had to find the opener and then score the second, third and fourth goal.

Barton scored two penalties and then Leon Best added a third goal to pile pressure on Arsene Wenger‘s side. With three minutes left to play, Cheick Tiote unleashed a thunderous strike from outside the box that went straight into the back of the net. It was total disaster for Arsenal and this clash is often remembered as one of the Premier League classics.

2. Bournemouth Vs Luton Town (4-3)

This is the most recent one on our list of the greatest comebacks in Premier League history. On 13 March, Bournemouth found themselves trailing 3-0 at half-time playing against Luton Town. Goals from Tahith Chong, Chiedozie Ogbene and Ross Barkley saw the recently promoted side take start the game in the best way possible. To many, it seemed the Cherries were done and dusted, with some even expecting the worst in the second period.

However, what followed after the break is one of the most iconic performances we’ve seen in the beautiful game. The turn around was started by Dominic Solanke who scored in the 50th minute after a moment of brilliance in Luton’s box. His strike gave the morale his teammates needed and with the fans now on their feet, it wasn’t long before the second goal arrived.

Illia Zabarnyi scored a header in the 62nd minute to make it 3-2, piling pressure on Luton. Barely two minutes later, the scores were level, thanks to a fantastic solo goal from Antoine Semenyo. The Ghanaian then scored his side’s winning goal in the 85th minute to spark celebrations among the Bournemouth faithfuls.

3. Manchester City City Vs Queens Park Rangers (3-2)

This match will always feature among the greatest comebacks in Premier League history. On 13 May 2012, Manchester City were playing QPR in the final game of the season. The visitors were leading the game 2-1 in added time and a defeat to QPR would mean rivals Manchester United were going to be crowned Premier League champions.

When it seemed all hope was lost, Edin Dzeko equalized in the 92nd minute and then two minutes later Sergio Aguero scored the winning goal for City. There were wild scenes at the Etihad as Auguero had scored what was arguably the most important goal in Manchester City’s history. That goal won City their first league title in 44 years.
