The right-back progressed through the youth system and even captained teams through various youth levels. Initially, he played as a midfielder but then transitioned to a right-back. His rise to prominence was marked by a move to Liverpool at the age of eighteen.
He made his senior debut for Liverpool and this rise saw him win the Liverpool Young Player of the Season award for two consecutive years. The next season was a golden one and he became the youngest player to start in consecutive Champions League finals, lifting the trophy with Liverpool.
