  • Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 in the English Premier League
  • The win moves them to fourth in the standings with 47 points

The Tottenham vs Brighton fixture played on Saturday evening ended in a 2-1 victory for Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs came from behind to secure a crucial victory at home as the race for the top four gets more interesting.

Brighton had taken the lead in the first half through Pascal Gross, who converted from the penalty spot after Danny Welbeck had been fouled in the box by Micky van de Ven. Spurs found their way back into the match in the second half when Pape Sarr netted home from a rebound. The hosts then found the winning goal deep in stoppage time, thanks to Brennan Johnson who was at the right place to convert Son Heung-min’s ball across goal.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou was impressed by the performance of his players in the second half and the impact of the changes he made.

“Scoring in the last minute you have those mixed feelings of joy and relief. First half, we lacked things but second half was better, we put them under more pressure and played cleaner football and ultimately got the rewards. The positive thing is that we had players being able to come on that could make an impact for us, which does make a difference particularly when games are tight if you can bring on some quality and both of those contributions were key.” Sky Sports quotes Ange Postecoglou.

The 2-1 win moves Tottenham Hotspur to fourth in the Premier League standings with 47 points, just one point above Aston Villa who host Manchester United later today (Sunday).

Ange Postecoglou made two changes from the team that was held to a 2-2 draw at Everton, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Brennan Johnson being replaced by Pape Sarr and Dejan Kulusevski.

On the other hand, Brighton made five changes from the squad that thrashed Crystal Palace 4-1. The Seagulls manager Roberto De Zerbi was not at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium due to suspension. Nevertheless, he was in contact with assistant coach Andrea Maldera who was in charge.

Brighton started the Tottenham vs Brighton game on a high note and almost took the lead inside 47 seconds. Guglielmo Vicario, who was criticized due to his performance against Everton, made a big save to deny Danny Welbeck after the forward had dispossessed Danny Micky van de Ven.

The visitors fast start was eventually rewarded in the 17th minute when Pascal Gross converted from the penalty spot. This was after Spurs centre-back van de Ven clumsily fouled Welbeck inside the box.

Trailing 1-0 at home, Ange Postecoglou’s side needed an equalizer and they moved forward in numbers attempting to find their way back into the game. James Maddison threaded a brilliant ball to Richarlison but Brighton’s keeper Jason Steele did well to stop the Brazilian’s effort from going in. Maddison then decided to try his luck but the shot went agonizingly wide.

Spurs were almost caught when Vicario’s poor ball to Rodrigo Bentancur created a big chance for the visitors. Luckily, the goalkeeper made amends by denying Kaoru Mitoma.

Tottenham continued to push for a leveller before halftime but were unlucky as none of their efforts before the break produced the desired outcome. Their presence in front of Brighton’s goal eventually paid off in the 61st minute when Pape Sarr found the equalizer.

Postecoglou made three changes immediately after the goal, bringing on Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-min and Yves Bissouma. Whereas Son was returning from the Asian Cup, Bissouma was making his first appearance since Mali was knocked out of AFCON.

Brighton controlled the match after conceding but missed several opportunities. In the end, they were made to pay when Brennan Johnson scored deep in stoppage time to earn Spurs their fifth consecutive home Premier League win.

The Seagulls, who haven’t won any of their last six away games, are ninth on the Premier League standings with 35 points.
