Quincy Promes is the latest footballer to find himself on the unfavourable side of the law, with the Dutchman being sentenced to six years in prison
Amsterdam District Court ruled on Wednesday that Promes was involved in drug trafficking back in 2020
Promes was not in court during the ruling and will appeal his sentence, as per his lawyers
Dutch professional footballer Quincy Promes has joined the list of top footballers who have been sentenced to prison for involvement in criminal activities.
Footballers are amongst the most admired personalities in the world. They are paid well, live in luxurious mansions, drive high-end cars and some even own private jets. Amidst all this, it is easy to forget that at the end of it all, footballers are also humans and are certainly not free from the full wrath of the law.
Quincy Promes is the latest footballer to find himself on the unfavourable side of the law, with the former Sevilla man actually being given prison time by a Dutch court.

Amsterdam District Court ruled that Promes, who currently plays in Russia for Spartak Moscow, was involved in drug trafficking back in 2020, and as a result, sentenced him in absentia to six years in prison on Wednesday. Well, the question many are now asking is will he actually serve his time? Read on to find out.
Will Quincy Promes Serve Serve His 6-Year Sentence?
To start with, Quincy Promes was not in court during the ruling. The 32-year-old is currently in Russia where he is still playing professionally after spells with some of Europe’s top clubs such as Ajax and Sevilla.
There is a strong possibility that Promes will not serve the prison sentence given to him. According to Reuters, the 32-year-old is not expected to return to the Netherlands “in the foreseeable future” and might just be lucky because there is no extradition agreement between his homeland and Russia.
While Promes is yet to release a statement following his sentencing, the prosecutors seemed to admit that the footballer may not serve his sentence while out of the country.
“He seems to think he is untouchable in Russia or abroad.” The prosecutors told Dutch Media after the court ruling, as per The Mirror.
Why Was Quincy Promes Sentenced To Prison?
As already mentioned, Quincy Promes was found guilty by a Dutch court for his involvement in drug trafficking. The Spartak Moscow star was charged in May 2022 for his alleged involvement in a smuggling operation that would end with two batches of cocaine.
The first batch was hidden in sacks of salt and involved 650 blocks of cocaine while the second batch had a logo of a tiger stamped on it and weighed in 712kgs.
The case came to light after the police Criminal Intelligence Team received information that Promes was involved in cocaine trade. With the information prompting an investigation to be launched, eavesdropping equipment was placed in the footballer’s car to collect evidence.
The court understood that phone taps showed Promes had been directly involved with the shipments of the drugs, hidden in shipments of salt from Brazil, and their further transport from the port. Prosecutors in the case asked for a nine-year sentence, alleging that Promes “normalizes and almost romanticizes the cocaine trade.”

However, judge M. Vaandrager insisted that the six-year prison sentence was enough punishment and would set example to many.
Promes’ lawyers told Dutch newspaper AD that the footballer will appeal his sentence, as he denies the charges of being involved with drug trafficking.
At one point, Quincy Promes was one of the best footballers in the world. Over the course of his career the Dutchman has played for Twente, Go Ahead Eagles (loan), Sevilla, Ajax and Spartak Moscow. At international level, he represented the Netherlands national team and scored seven goals in 50 appearances.
However, his career has now been undermined by criminal records, with Wednesday’s ruling being the second time he has been found guilty in a court of law. He was previously charged in 2021 with attempted manslaughter or assault and was sentenced to 18 months in jail last year.
