Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios is not retiring any time soon.

The Aussie who is at the Australian Open as a commentator dismissed retirement claims as absolute nonsense.

Several quarters within tennis circles speculated that the Wimbledon finalist is done with tennis.

Why is Nick Kyrgios Not Retiring?

The 28-year-old is not retiring because he still has a lot of energy left in him to play tennis. He figuratively says that he is ‘hungry more than ever’ to play tennis and win.

Rumour about his pending ‘retirement’ stems from a recent interview with The Age where he opened up about his tennis career.

He stated he was at a “crossroads” in his career and might continue exploring opportunities outside of tennis.

“It’s a conversation that needed to be had. I’m at a crossroads in my career and have reached a point where life after tennis is a prospect that excites me,” he told The Age.

He went on to state that he could still make money from travelling and offering tennis commentator services.

“I could travel the world making really good money commentating on the sport, doing things like I am now with my talk show interviewing guys like Gordon Ramsay and Mike Tyson.

“That’s a life people wish they had. Even the players on the circuit would love to be doing what I am doing now, but they have a different way of thinking.”

This sparked speculation that he is done with playing tennis and it is just a matter of time before he calls in time. However, word reached him about the speculation he has and he quickly clarified that all he wants is to play tennis.

“Attention…I am not retiring. Please don’t spread this garbage. I’m coming back and will be lighting up courts soon,” he wrote in Instagram.

“I have woken up today and realised about some articles going around and saying that I am retired and that I’m not going to play anymore. I just want to just clear it up, it’s absolute nonsense.”

He said that despite his injury-ridden season in 2023, he is in good physical form and he is spending a lot of time in the gym.

Why Did Nick Kyrgios Miss Australian Open 2024?

Kyrgios missed the Australian Open for the second time in 2024 due to injury. He suffered a wrist injury in June 2023 which followed his knee surgery. This made it difficult for him to make a comeback for the grass-court season last season.

He then picked up a knee injury late last year following an attack by robbers and this kept him out of the Australian Open for the second time.

“This is a very disappointing time for me, but I won’t be able to compete at the 2024 Australian Open. Obviously heartbreaking. I’ve had so many amazing memories there and I just want to really get back to playing at the top of my game and doing it right and I need a little more time,” he said in a statement.

What is Nick Kyrgios Doing Now?

Kyrgios amidst clearing it up that he is not retiring is currently offering Eurosport his services as a tennis analyst.

He stepped into the broadcasting arena for the first time in November 2023, contributing to Tennis Channel’s coverage during the ATP Finals in Turin.

During his inaugural broadcast, Kyrgios provided intriguing insights and showcased his expertise. The consensus was that he excelled in his role for Tennis Channel.

Eurosport, a seasoned broadcaster of the Australian Open for almost three decades, excitedly welcomed Kyrgios to their team for the inaugural Grand Slam of the new season.

“We’re particularly excited to welcome Nick Kyrgios to our English language commentary team this year and know fans will benefit from his unique perspectives and closeness to the current crop of champions and competitors taking to the court this year,” Eurosport said in a statement.
