Like many Dagestan fighters, Khabib was introduced to combat sports at a young age. He began training in wrestling at the age of eight under his father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov and later joined the military where he also trained in judo and sambo.
In September 2018, Khabib made his professional debut in MMA and went on to record four victories within a month. Over the next few years, he dominated fighters in Russia and Ukraine, winning a total of 16 fights.
Due to his impressive fighting skills, Khabib was signed by the UFC in later 2011. He competed in the lightweight division and secured victory against Kamal Shalorus in his debut to announce his arrival in the UFC.
