Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has hinted at a potential shift
Mercedes will adopt a more conventional design
The German-based F1 team concluded the 2023 season
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has hinted at a potential shift towards Red Bull car design, indicating that Mercedes will adopt a more conventional design for the 2024 F1 season.
The German-based F1 team concluded the 2023 season without a victory for the first time since 2011. This prompted significant transformations in their car design throughout the year.
The initial configuration was abandoned in favour of a B-spec layout starting at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Providing insights into the upcoming changes, Wolff shed light on the anticipated adjustments that will be unveiled when the 2024 car undergoes pre-season testing in Bahrain.
While Mercedes began 2022 with the most unconventional concept car design, rival teams have gradually converged towards a similar approach.
Red Bull’s successful design is now becoming the new F1 engineering standard. Despite this shift, Mercedes has hinted at a more conventional approach for its 2024 design.

Still, they maintain that it will still incorporate unique and innovative elements. Wolff now feels that his team with lead driver Lewis Hamilton took a huge gamble with the W14 which he raced in for the 2023 season.
“I think we were bold and courageous to embark on the road with such a car,” he told PlanetF1.com at the Autosport Awards.

He termed W 14’s design unique that no other team had. However, it was a big disappointment for most of the 2023 season.
“That was a different concept that nobody else had had before and it didn’t work. I think it’s as simple as that. It’s physics and not mystics. Next year’s car is going to be more conventional in what you would expect from a Formula 1 car, but there are a few interesting details that we have not seen on other cars yet,” he added.
Mercedes W14 Challenges
The Mercedes W14 which raced in the 2023 F1 season, faced several challenges that hampered its performance throughout the year.
A fundamental flaw in the car’s design, particularly in its floor, resulted in a lack of downforce, a crucial element for generating grip and speed in Formula One. This deficiency made the car unstable and difficult to handle, especially in high-speed corners.
Furthermore, the W14 suffered from porpoising, an aerodynamic phenomenon that caused the car to bounce excessively along the straights. This instability not only affected driver comfort but also compromised the car’s performance, particularly in qualifying and race starts.
Despite continuous efforts to address these issues, Mercedes struggled to overcome the inherent limitations of their W14 design. The car’s shortcomings ultimately contributed to the team’s disappointing performance in the 2023 season, falling short of their championship aspirations.
Wolff acknowledges that he anticipated difficult moments when Mercedes was up and shining just before the start of the 2022 season.
“We knew that there will be a time when it’s getting tougher, after eight titles that happened,” he stated.
Nonetheless, Wolff remains focused more on the future. Acknowledging the challenges faced, Wolff sees it as a vital part of the learning curve that contributes to improvement.

He states that the days of loss for Mercedes are great for the team’s learning, adding that they have formed part of their character building.
Expressing a desire for a World Championship contention that did not materialize, he emphasized the team’s forward-looking perspective in the 2024 F1 season.
Admitting moments of self-doubt, Hamilton openly talked about the challenges faced during a season marked by the absence of victories, a stark departure from his storied career.
“When you have difficult seasons like this, there are always going to be moments when you’re like: ‘Is it me, or is it the car? Do you still have it? Has it gone?’” he told BBC in an exclusive interview.
The genesis of Hamilton’s tribulations lies in Mercedes’ decision to persist with their unique car design philosophy. This is a choice contrary to his preferences and the broader trend in the Formula 1 landscape.
