Gonzalo Montiel started playing football early, and his professional life came very swiftly. Having showed the potential to become a star in the football world, it was easy for him to secure a spot in the River Plate academy. The future Copa America winner spent his entire youth career at River Plate before turning professional.
In October 2015, Montiel received his first call to the senior team for a match against Defensa y Justicia. However, he remained on the bench as his side suffered a 1-0 loss. The young defender made his long awaited debut on 30 April 2016 in a goalless draw against Club Atletico Velez Sarsfield. That was the only appearance that he made that season.
