His journey in combat sports started at the age of seven when he began his training in Karate to defend himself against a school bully. He was already a 2nd dan Kyokushi karate black belt at the age of 12. While at high school, he held the record for a number of chin-ups done.
GSP began his MMA career when he was 21 years old and made his debut against Salvadoran-Canadian fighter Ivan Menjivar. He defeated Justin Bruckmann in his second bout, which was for the UCC Welterweight Championship. He won via submission in the first round.
On 31 January 2004, GSP made his debut at Dana White‘s UFC, defeating Karo Parisyan via unanimous decision. He faced BJ Penn at UFC 94 and another prominent fighter Michael Bisping at UFC 217, Following his victory over Bisping, GSP won the UFC Middleweight Championship.
However, he vacated the title after 34 days because of health reasons and didn’t want to hold up the division. During his career, there was a time when GSP took a hiatus. He retired with a pro record of 26 wins and two losses.
