Manchester United have lost five of their ten games at home so far, making it their worst start to a campaign since 1930. Speaking after the humbling defeat to Newcastle, manager Erik ten Hag apologized to the fans.

“We know it’s not good enough. We have to take responsibility for it. I have to take responsibility for it. I have to say sorry to the fans as it was below our standards and we have to put it right. We have to recover from it and we have to do it quickly. Saturday is the next game [against Fulham] and we have to raise our standards. This is not good enough.” Sky Sports quotes Erik ten Hag.

Wanting to right the wrongs of Sunday’s derby defeat to Manchester City, Manchester United emerged onto the Old Trafford turf with a point to prove.

Erik ten Hag made seven changes, with Bruno Fernandes, Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford on the bench. Casemiro returned after an injury while Alejandro Garnacho and Mason Mount were given rare starts. On the other hand, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe made eight changes. The Magpies started with five full-backs and no recognized striker.

Manchester United started the game well, controlling position and keeping opposition penned inside their own half. Casemiro registered the first attempt from a distance but his effort was well saved by by Martin Dubravka. The visitors soon got into the game, with Matt Ritchie registering their first effort on goal.

Manchester United were almost reduced to ten men inside 20 minutes but Hannibal Mejbri was lucky to avoid a second yellow card. It didn’t take long before Newcastle opened the scoring through Miguel Almiron who had been played through on goal by Tino Livramento.

Erik ten Hag made two changes at half-time, introducing Sofyan Amrabat and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. But things went from bad to worse in the 60th minute when Joe Willock made it 3-0 for the visitors.

Manchester United brought in Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund but Newcastle United defended well to knock the Carabao Cup holders out of the competition.
