Gor slay Muhoroni to stay second as Homeboyz move fourth

FKF Premier League defending champions Gor Mahia moved to second spot in the FKF Premier League after edging out Muhoroni Youth 2-0 at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homabay. Goals from Benson Omalla and Chris Ochieng in either half saw Gor move to within a point of league leaders Posta Rangers.

Gor had a good start against Muhoroni and needed just quarter of an hour to break the deadlock. Austin Odhiambo initiated the move from midfield, laying the ball for Omalla’s run into the box. The forward controlled the ball and shot into the net for his eighth goal of the season.

Muhoroni provided some resistance, pressing to try and get back on level terms but couldn’t find the back of the net.

They were punished by Gor at the death, when Chris Ochieng scored his first goal in Gor colors with a neat header at the backpost from a cross on the right.

“I am delighted with the win and how we played. Of course it wasn’t very fluid because of the break we had but all in all, I think we played with some good desire and intensity,” Gor Mahia head coach Jonathan McKinstry said after the duel.

Meanwhile, KCB moved into third in the standings when they beat Murang’a Seal 2-1 at their backyard. Batts Awita scored late for the hosts, but it wasn’t enough to conjure a comeback.

Kahiro get scoring boots on 

Francis Kahiro, who seems to have finally found his scoring boots gave the bankers the lead after 12 minutes, before Haniff Wesonga scored the second three minutes after the break.

After back to back wins, the bankers are on 22 points, just three shy of leaders Posta Rangers.

Elsewhere at the Ulinzi complex in Lang’ata, Kakamega Homeboyz scored late to beat hosts Ulinzi Stars 1-o and move to fourth. Substitute Oscar Paul scored a late goal to hand the visitors their third successive victory.

“The guys who came in really gave us what we asked of them and I am delighted with the win. We played well and controlled the game,” said Homeboyz coach Patrick Odhiambo.

He added; “It is too early to start talking about the league title. For us, we are going game by game and trying to win each match as it comes.”

Closely contested duel 

Action between Ulinzi Stars and Kakamega Homeboyz

It had been a closely contested duel between the two sides, with chances few and far in between.

The closest opportunities were off an Ambrose Sifuna shot for Homeboyz which was well saved by Stephen Ochieng in the Ulinzi goal while Moses Shummah also had a decent left footed effort from range fly just wide.

Ulinzi’s best chance was off a Boniface Muchiri freekick which however flew straight to the keeper’s arms. The military side had struggled to create much infront of goal, and Enosh Ochieng who had started as the pointman upfront cut a long frustrated figure most afternoon.

He was closely marked and didn’t have enough space to operate in. Not even the introduction of Mark Bikokwa in the second half could change much for the Anthony Kimani coached side.

They were stabbed in the last minute when off a setpiece, the ball was knocked down into Paul’s path by Shami Kibwana and the latter slid the ball into the bottom left corner, to win the game for the visitors.
