Cole Palmer scored a late penalty to deny former club Manchester City victory at Stamford Bridge in a thriller against Chelsea.

Manchester City had appeared set to move three points clear after Rodri’s deflected strike in the 86th minute went in. But Chelsea, who showed superb resilience throughout the match, were not to be denied and were awarded after Ruben Dias fouled substitute Armando Broja in the box. Palmer made no mistake as he converted from the spot in the 95th minute to provide one final twist.

Speaking after the match, Cole Palmer said he trusted in his ability while taking the penalty that helped Chelsea secure a point against City.

“It was a long time waiting, but I felt confident. I’ve had a few now, I kept focused in the 90-something minute. I won’t say I work on penalties, I don’t. I just trusted in my ability. I was excited to see the game, we went behind a few times and bounced back.” Sky Sports quotes Cole Palmer.

The draw means Manchester City move a single point clear of Arsenal and Liverpool at the top of the table while Chelsea move up a place to 10th on the standings.

How The Game Unfolded

Defending champions Manchester City had taken an early lead in the 25th minute through Erling Haaland who converted a penalty. But Thiago Silva levelled the scores for the Blues four minutes later from Conor Gallagher’s corner at the near post.

Raheem Sterling then gave the Blues the lead against his former club after 37 minutes of play, converting Reece James’ low cross. City levelled on the stoke of half-time when Manuel Akanji headed in from Bernardo Silva’s cross.

Pep Guardiola’s side went ahead two minutes after the break through Erling Haaland, who scrambled in Julian Alvarez’s low cross at the far post. Chelsea found their way back into the game again, this time through Nicolas Jackson, who pounced after Ederson had punched Gallagher’s shot.

Manchester City thought they had won the game with four minutes left to play when Rodri’s powerful shot from outside the box touched off Thiago Silva past goalkeeper Roberto Sanchez. However, the points were shared in the end when Palmer stayed cool amid the mayhem to convert a late penalty for the Blues.

Speaking after the 4-4 draw with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino said his players deserve praise for their performance.

“Very proud and so happy. The players deserve praise because of the performance. We faced a team that for me is the best in the world. Many circumstances happened during the game that made me very proud. The way we managed the game was really good.” Mauricio Pochettino is quoted by Sky Sports.
