Atletico Madrid thrashed ten-man Celtic 6-0 in Group E UEFA Champions League fixture played on Tuesday night. Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata both scored twice as Diego Simeone’s side ran riot against Celtic. Samuel Lino and Saul Niguez also scored for Atletico Madrid.
Daizen Maeda was sent off after 23 minutes of play, a decision that Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was not happy with.

“I thought we made a good start, we looked confident and were ready to fight in the game. I’m really, really disappointed with the sending off. When you see the images that the referee has seen, it wasn’t representative of the actual challenge. For us to lose a man for that, it was going to be really difficult. I don’t want to go on about the officials. You have to accept decisions. It feels more like a computer game, the constant looking at the screens.” Sky Sports quotes Brendan Rodgers.

How Atletico Madrid Beat Celtic
Celtic knew a result against Atletico was vital to leave them with a chance of progressing in the competition before Christmas. Their solitary point came against the La Liga side in Glasgow two weeks ago and they were looking forward to secure their first win at Metropolitano Stadium. However, things didn’t go as planned for Brendan Rodgers and his men in Madrid.
Antoine Griezmann put Atletico Madrid in front barely six minutes into the match to get off to a perfect start. The Frenchman was lurking on the edge of the box when a cross was headed away to his feet, and his deflected shot went into the bottom corner, deceiving Joe Hart.
Celtic looked to be growing into the game after falling behind and even thought they had a penalty after 15 minutes of play when Daizen Maeda was entangled with Mario Hermoso. It turned to be a free kick after a VAR review found that contact had happened outside the box.
Maeda and Hermoso were involved in another incident a few minutes later and the former was initially shown a yellow card. But after a VAR review, the referee upgraded the card to red, leaving Celtic with a mountain to climb.
Alvaro Morata doubled Atletico Madrid’s lead shortly before the halftime break to end Celtic’s hopes. The Spanish side were utterly merciless after the break, scoring some exceptional goals.

Griezmann scored his second of the night, an overhead kick on the hour-mark before substitute Lino increased Atletico’s lead to four six minutes later. The trend continued with Morata grabbing his second of the night before Saul Niguez scored the host’s sixth of the night towards the end.
With two games remaining, Celtic are five points adrift of Feyenoord who sit third on Group E. Celtic visit Feyenoord next.
