Tottenham Hotspur returned to the top of the English Premier League after securing a 2-0 victory over London rivals Fulham. Son Heung-min and James Maddison scored as Spurs’ best start to a top-flight season for more than 60 years got even better.

Captain Son curled in an excellent goal towards the end of the first half before setting up summer signing Maddison who got his first home strike. Spurs, who have only dropped points this season in the London derbies against Arsenal and Brentford, are now on top of the table with 23 points. On the other hand, Fulham are 13th on the table with 11 points.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is enjoying the best start by a new manager in the Premier League. However, the Australian who was prised from Celtic and tasked with rejuvenating Spurs’ fortunes was not happy with his team’s performance in the second half.

“It was a good result. Fulham are a tough team to break down. In the first-half he handled it pretty well, nice and calm. With the chance we had, probably should have had a second and a third. The second half wasn’t great for us. We didn’t play anywhere near the levels we can with the ball. Without the ball we were still excellent in terms of our pressing. With the ball we were really, really wasteful. That’s probably the worst 45 minutes with the ball we’ve had.” Sky Sports quotes Ange Postecoglou.

How Tottenham Hotspur Beat Fulham

With the aim of moving back to the top of the table, Tottenham Hotspur started the match quickly. They carved out chances in the opening minutes of the game, with Son being denied by Fulham’s goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Defender Micky van de Ven had another opportunity but he powered his header over the bar. Spurs were then caught and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was forced to make a stunning save to deny Joao Palhinha.

Spurs created the biggest chance of the first half after 30 minutes of play when playmaker Maddison picked up a loose pass inside his own half and passed to Dejan Kulusevski who in turn fed Richarlison. However, the Brazilian shot inches wide.

The hosts eventually opened the scoring a few minutes later when Bassey gave the ball away to Son, who fired into the top corner.

Fulham boss Marco Silva made two changes after the break, with attackers Raul Jimenez and Alex Iwobi being introduced. However, things went from bad to worse barely ten minutes after the break as Bassey gave another wayward pass which led to Spurs scoring their second goal of the night.

Son teed up Maddison who slotted home confidently. Despite the visitors trying to create chances in the second half, Spurs held on to the 90th minute.
