Samoa Joe made his wrestling debut in December 1999, three months after beginning his training at the United Independent Wrestling Alliance (UIWA).
In 2000, Joe began making appearances at the California-based Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW). He feuded with John Cena at the promotion and later won the UPW No Holds Barred Championship. In March 2001, Joe won the UPW Heavyweight Championship after defeating Christopher Daniels.
Joe then joined ROH in 2002 as Christopher Daniels “hired assassin” and later raised his rank to become the ROH World Heavyweight Champion. He held the title for 21 months.

In 2005, the American wrestler joined Total Nonstop Action (TNA) and spent almost a decade there. While at TNA, Joe went on a 19-month-long undefeated streak. He also held the TNA World Heavyweight Championship once, the TNA X Division Championship five times and the TNA World Tag Team Championship twice, among other titles.
In 2015, Samoa Joe joined WWE and was assigned to NXT where he made his debut that same year. He went on to become the first-ever two-time NXT Champion, and the co-winner of the inaugural Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic teaming with Finn Balor.
Joe then joined the main roster in 2017 and won the WWE United States Championship twice. In 2019, he began working as a color commentator due to injuries. In April 2022, Samoa Joe made his AEW debut after returning to ROH.
