He grew up in a creative and unconventional environment in Fremantle, Australia. His parents influenced him to play basketball. Initially, he was not serious about pursuing a career.

On getting to high school, he became serious about the sport and quickly developed into one of the best players in Australia.

After graduating from high school, he played college basketball at the University of New Mexico where he helped the Lobos to the NCAA Tournament.

Longley was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the seventh overall pick in the 1991 NBA draft and played for two seasons before being traded to the Chicago Bulls.

With the Chicago Bulls, he spent seven seasons and helped them to win three championships before being traded to the Phoenix Suns for one season and then retired.

After retiring from basketball, Longley returned to Australia where he worked as an assistant coach for the Australian national basketball team as a commentator for NBA games.
