Inter Milan beat Austrian champions RB Salzburg 2-1 last night in the Champions League to seize the initiative in Group D.
Alexis Sanchez scored his first goal since returning to Inter Milan on a 12-month deal this summer. Oscar Gloukh levelled for the visitors before Hakan Calhanoglu sealed the win for Inter from the spot. Inter Milan are top of Group D on seven points, while RB Salzburg are third on three points.

“A very important victory for the qualification, we were playing against a sparkling team. The team won with merit against a team that we knew would trouble us. But we know it’s a balanced group… and now we will have two consecutive away matches. We will have to prepare them well, knowing that the Champions League does not give anything away. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi said after the match, as per Sportstar.
How Inter Beat Salzburg
With just a single point separating the top-three clubs in Group D, the clash between Inter Milan and RB Salzburg was great opportunity for one of the teams to take control.
Salzburg’s young squad showed no stage fright at the San Siro and pressed hard from the word go. Oscar Gloukh came close to opening the scoring for the visitors in the fourth minute, prompting Inter keeper Yann Sommer to react quickly to parry the ball.
The save proved key in changing the flow of the game as Inter began taking control of the match. It didn’t take long before Simone Inzaghi’s side opened the scoring.
Alexis Sanchez collected a pass inside the box and sent it inside the far post to score his first goal since his return to Italy over the summer. Sanchez is now the highest-scoring Chilean in the Champions League with 16 goals, one more than Arturo Vidal.
The goal swung the game firmly in Inter’s favour and the three-times champions had another opportunity, which Lautaro Martinez squandered.
Inter Milan were left rueing Lautaro’s miss shortly after the restart when RB Salzburg drew level. Midfielder Gloukh levelled with a first touch from the edge of the box just before the hour mark.
However, Inter bounced back in the 64th minute, with Calhanoglu slotting home from the spot after the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on Davide Frattesi. Calhanoglu send Leipzig goalkeeper the wrong way to give the home fans a reason to celebrate.
Lautaro Martinez thought he had increased the advantage for Inter in the 81st but the goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR review. The Australian side pressed in the last minutes of the match but Inter were untroubled in seeing out a victory.
