Inter Milan have disclosed the precise amount received from Manchester United in the summer transfer window for the acquisition of Andre Onana. United finalized the signing of Onana in July as a strategic move to secure a long-term replacement for the departed David de Gea, who currently remains without a club after the expiration of his contract.

Onana gained global recognition during his commendable six-year tenure at Ajax, notably playing a key role in their remarkable journey to the semi-finals of the Champions League during the 2018/19 season. His transfer to Inter last summer marked an important transition in his career, as he played an instrumental part in Inter’s path to the Champions League final, where they unfortunately succumbed to Manchester City.

Earlier this year, Chelsea had expressed interest in acquiring Onana’s services, but ultimately opted for the more economical choice of securing Brighton & Hove Albion’s Robert Sanchez. This decision paved the way for the Cameroonian goalkeeper to join Manchester United and reunite with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.

Initial reports at the time of the transfer suggested that United had paid a fee slightly exceeding €46 million (£40 million), including add-ons, for Onana’s transfer. Inter has now officially confirmed in their public financial records that the actual sum paid was €50.2 million (£43.7 million). This financial transaction consequently positioned Onana as the fifth most expensive sale in Inter’s history, following the likes of prominent players such as Mauro Icardi, Achraf Hakimi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Romelu Lukaku.

In a comparative analysis, the amount spent by United for Onana’s arrival did not even secure a spot within their top ten most expensive imports. Notably, United allocated more funds during the same transfer window for the acquisitions of Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund.

Despite his hefty price tag, Onana faced a challenging start to his tenure at Old Trafford, marked by a series of errors and blunders. However, the Cameroonian goalkeeper managed to redeem himself in Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Kobenhavn, demonstrating resilience and skill by saving a crucial last-minute penalty from Jordan Larsson, thereby preserving the team’s vital three points.

The revelation of the financial specifics regarding Onana’s transfer highlights the complexities and financial intricacies involved in modern football, underscoring the substantial investments made by clubs in securing top talent and the subsequent expectations and pressures placed on players to perform at the highest level.
