Career

Harbhajan Singh began his cricket journey playing as a batsman under the guidance of Charanjit Singh Bhullar. Following the death of Bhullar, Singh converted to spin bowling while being trained by Davider Arora. He broke into the Punjab Under-16s aged 15 years and 4 months during the 1995-1996 season.

In his debut against Haryana, Singh took 7/46 and 5/138 to help Punjab secure a nine-wicket win. He impressed in the following matches and received promotion to the Under-19s the following season.

Singh made his first-class cricket debut in late 1997 during the 1997-98 Ranji Trophy season. In January 1998, he played for India at the Under-19 World Cup. That same year, he made his Test and One Day International (ODI) debut

Singh’s international career was affected afterwards due to several disciplinary incidents and investigations into the legality of his bowling action. He returned to the national team in 2001 after captain Sourav Ganguly called for his inclusion in the squad following an injury on leg spinner Anil Kumble.

Singh took 32 wickets in the following series and set a record by becoming the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in Test cricket. He suffered an injury in 2003 that kept him out for much of the following year.

Harbhajan Singh became a regular in India’s squad from 2007 and helped his country win the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 Cricket World Cup.

Singh also played in the Indian Premier League with teams such as Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings. He ended his cricket career that spanned over two decades in 2016.
