Frank Mir began his journey in MMA while still young. He began competing in American Kenpo at his parents’ school where he earned his black belt as a teenager. He soon began wrestling to avoid submissions after being convinced by his father.
On 2 November 2001, Frank Mir made his UFC debut at UFC 34 facing Roberto Traven. He won the fight via armbar in the first round and earned “Tapout of the Night”. He faced the legendary Pete Williams in his next fight and won in 46 seconds.
Mir suffered his first loss at UFC 38 to Ian Freeman. He would then rebound with three wins, earning him the opportunity to challenge for the vacant UFC Heavyweight Championship.
