Chelsea give up two-goal lead to draw 2-2 against Arsenal

Arsenal stormed back to draw 2-2 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to maintain their unbeaten Premier League start. Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk had earlier put the Blues in control and it seemed victory was on their side after 77 minutes of play.

However, things rapidly changed after Declan Rice pulled one back for Mikel Arteta’s side who now had the momentum after seeming to have accepted their fate early on. Eventually, there were no winners at Stamford Bridge as Leandro Trossard converted from Bukayo Saka’s cross with six minutes left to play.

Manchester City’s win earlier on Saturday saw the defending champions go top of the Premier League table and Arsenal’s fight back means they are second only on goal difference. Meanwhile, Chelsea are tenth, three points behind Manchester United who secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Sheffield United later in the day.

How Arsenal Fought Back To Secure Draw Against Chelsea

It was poring at Stamford Bridge as Mauricio Pochettino’s side hosted the Gunners in the London derby on Saturday evening. Chelsea came flying out of the blocks and nearly opened the scoring inside a minute but when Enzo Fernandez fired narrowly wide. In contrast, Arsenal couldn’t get going despite heading into the match as favourites.

Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer looked dangerous from the first minute and made things difficult for an unsettled Gunners backline. Eventually, the Blues had a golden opportunity to open the scoring after William Saliba handled the inside the box.

Palmer made no mistake with his composed strike sending Arsenal’s keeper David Raya the wrong way. The former Manchester City man came close to scoring 15 minutes later but narrowly missed.

Arsenal offered nothing in the first half and things got worse for them when Mykhailo Mudryk’s cross-shot looped over a stranded Raya. This was Mudryk’s third goal in four starts for club and country.

When all seemed lost, Arsenal found their way back into the match when Declan Rice pounced on Robert Sanchez’s poor pass. The England international took a first-time shot that went just inside the post in the 77th minute. Arsenal would then go on to pile pressure on the hosts and it paid off when Trossard levelled the scores in the 84th minute.

Chelsea avoided a record fourth-straight Premier League loss at home to Arsenal but will be kicking themselves for not capitalizing on a match they seemed to have already won. Speaking after the 2-2 draw against Arsenal, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino said he was disappointed because his side dropped two points.

“Until the we conceded the first goal the game was under control, we didn’t concede many chances to an amazing team. I’m disappointed because I think we dropped two points. Today we are in an era of football where we want to play from the back. Mistakes can happen in football. It was unlucky.” Sky Sports quotes Mauricio Pochettino.
